SUNSHINE & STEAM – we were at Crowborough Miniature Railway in a jointly run event as guests of Crowborough Locomotive Society. The Society’s members really turned on a show with their range of immaculately presented locomotives, which took it in turns to give well over three hundred train rides on the day over their newly extended track.
Crowborough Model Boat Club was also present with boats of all descriptions on the boating pond. We were particularly thrilled by a visit from the Town Mayor, Councillor Greg Rose who is pictured on the day taking a train ride with Club President Hilary Lyon.
I’M FOREVER BLOWING BUBBLES – NOT: it was sunshine all the way as Crowborough Lions pitched up at Wadhurst Country Fair with their candyfloss and popcorn machines. Candyfloss scored the biggest hit with the youngsters and Lion Peter Wright was working non-stop with the spinning sugar, but with the wind blowing into the front of the stall he was quickly tasting the fruits of his labours.
Backed up by fellow Lions Jean Bore, Brian Meyers and Hugh McKelvie, and despite their new attraction (the two-speed bubble machine) suffering a malfunction, the Club had a very successful day.

LIONS SALUTE WINNERS OF SPONSORED DARTS MARATHON – Crowborough Athletic FC are not only renowned for their prowess at football but also for their ladies darts team who, with the highest score, won this year’s Crowborough Lions sponsored darts marathon. The prize for the highest individual sponsorship total was also achieved by a member of the winning team namely Karen Brumpton who raised a magnificent £400. Pictured are members of the winning team together with Club President Hilary Lyon receiving their trophy.
EASTER EGG RAFFLE – AND THE WINNER IS…Pete Chappell with John Ricketts receiving the second prize, both of Crowborough. Pictured is the winner, and Lucy Saunders & Michelle Williams of MORRISONS who assisted Lion Alan Kempthorne and his wife Carol with the draw.
“DOWN THE HATCH’ – the name of the winning team in Crowborough Lions Big Quiz on Sat 10 Mar’18. Lying in first place at the end of the first half, just one point ahead of ‘Real Ale Madrid’ and ‘Braysher’s Bird Brains’, the winners piled on the pressure in the second half to pull clear by two points and take the £125 first prize. ‘Real Ale Madrid’ held on to second place and a storming run-in from ‘The Fossils’ gave them third place. The second half included a round of food anagrams, the quizmaster’s favourite being ‘pick bald dung’ = black pudding.
